Externship Blog

We are creating a healthy living life style for upcoming college students by creating a nutritious, fitness, and Zumba routine. Since Laura Webb is a license Zumba instructor, we decided to have Laura as our mentor. We will be researching healthy foods and workout routines and blog about them. Our final product is creating a free one day Zumba class. We're excited about actually teaching the class. We never been an instructor, so it's pretty exciting that will happen. One thing that some of us are nervous about is getting in front of the audience. Some of us are stage fright so overcoming that will be something to work on.

Every day of the week is a different workplace for us. Monday is research day so every Monday of each week, we will meet at a café that is midpoint for all four of us and research what our topic/genre is for that week. The people that is in this project are the people that I will be working with. We all had interest in this project, so we are all working together to make it happen. What all strikes us about the job, is how much time that has to be put into it. We are all dedicating our time and passion to have this happen. Some of us are worried about remembering everything but we're excited to see the final outcome of everything.

- What questions do you have about your internship/project?
- What connections can you make between this internship /project and what you've done in school?
- Has anything happened that's worth telling us about? Funny stories? Pictures? Videos?
- What new skills are you developing (or will you need to develop) for this internship/project?
- We're developing the skills to get down the dance routines faster, as well as practice makes perfect! we need these skills to be fully developed and perfect because at the end of externship we need to be on our best performance level with the routines memorized so we can get it all down and run a good show.

Due to the fact that we constantly update our blog tab with videos, we refrained from posting them once again.

- How have you advocated for yourself during your externship, or seen advocacy demonstrated in other situations?
Since this is a self made project we've been working together as a group. We've definitely been pushing each others buttons a bit after working with each other 24/7, we could start getting frustrated and taking it out on each other. The way I've noticed self advocacy within each other is when someone decides to speak up and comes up with a new step to replace in a zumba choreo. Or if things are getting a little too tense, someone will usually step up to ease up things for everyone a bit. Another situation were self advocacy is implied was when we reached out to Laura, our mentor, for help with resources. Or reaching out to dance places that would allow us to use their dancing place, for example the drama teacher at High Tech Middle Media Arts to allow us to use her main commons space for dance time.

This externship experience has definitely helped me realize that I want to pursue fitness and nutrition in the future. Zumba works out every part of the body and I've really been analyzing which dance moves effect which body parts. Also since part of our project is doing workouts, I get to learn new workouts every week and I also get to see how they affect the body. This is really interesting and exciting to me, which is how I know for sure that I want to pursue a career in this area. It's also just fun observing the rest of the people in our zumba group and seeing which workouts and zumba moves are hardest and easiest for them. This has been a great experience overall and has led me to look forward to a future career in fitness and nutrition.

What did you learn about your own work from your externship project?
Throughout externship I have learned to put the way I think into this project meaning since we are a team we either work as a team or we lose together, which has really helped me to learn how to work as a team and either be the leader or the learner.
How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace/world/self?
One way I made a meaningful contribution to my team was by stepping in when someone didn't agree w/ a dance move or needed help with a dance move or didn't agree with another person and I would try to help them by changing the move, going over the move with them or simply helping them realize that we are a team and we need to stick together..... But as well everyone in the group always stepped in and as a team and we helped eachother out and always communicating.
How did your project go from an idea or inspiration to a final product?
When we first had the idea of doing a project with a group of four girls that so happen to be best friends seemed like we would have a great time. We had so many ideas but we didn't finalize anything until we based our ideas from the skills each one of us had. Such as myself (Nicole) since I had a bit more experience with fitness I was in charge of coming up with a fitness routine every week, and for Aziza since she wants to go into a career in fitness and nutrition we thought she would be a good fit for coming up with healthy meals, and for Jennifer and Priscilla they are both into zumba and so far it has been very successful.
